Episode 28: The Hemophilia Podcast featuring Dr. Joanna Pierro and Dr. Anand Swaminathan
Learning Points:
- Hemophilia A - issue with Factor 8, Hemophilia B - issue with Factor 9
- There are 3 main classifications: mild (factor level >5%), moderate (levels between 1-5%), or severe (<1%). Ask family or check charts.
- The most common presentations you will see in patients with severe hemophilia are spontaneous bleeds (such as hemarthrosis or intramuscular hemorrhage) or bleeding after trauma, even minor trauma.
-In a patient with known hemophilia and trauma, regardless of obvious injury, we ALWAYS administer factor first.
-Immediate Contact with Hematology: Stress the vital importance of early consultation with the on-call hematologist. This allows for tailored treatment recommendations and coordinated care.
Other Important Considerations:
Avoiding unnecessary venipunctures and intramuscular injections.
Importance of MedicAlert bracelets/identification.
