Wellness is something that many of us put last. We would rather work a shift late, study until the early morning, and hang with friends than think about our overall health. If you are like me, it tends to be at the end of your to-do list. But is that healthy? Sometime last year, I was pushing myself to the max, taking care of work commitments and personal responsibilities and not tending to myself until I hit a wall. I crashed. Nothing left to give to anyone. Nothing left to give myself. It has also been stressful recently as a third year and making major decisions. Where to go? Where to work? I once again stopped paying close attention to myself. What’s the end result of this neglect? Weight gain, decreased sleeping, weight loss, inability to concentrate - the list never ends.
So, what is my advice? Pay attention to yourself first. As someone told me, there is no way you can take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself. So, JUST DO IT! Exercise, eat right, have fun, have “me” time, and LIVE. Live this life to the fullest. Such a thing is even possible as a resident.
